Small Business Saturday, which falls between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, is a day to remind consumers to put money back into the local economy.
Jackie Bacha and her poodle Navar have been running "Oh My Dog! Boutique and Spa" for nearly five years.
"He likes to sit up in the chair and greet customers and check them out and pretty much he thinks he's in charge here," said Bacha about Navar, who sat next to her during the interview.
"So you need some accessories," Bacha said while she was helping customers Saturday. "Thank you so much. Good to see you," she said to one customer.
Bacha's store is just one of thousands of small businesses in Scottsdale.
"The customers are so nice and you get to really build a relationship. You know them. You know their dogs, you know what to buy," Bacha said.
Susan Schmitz, who was shopping and also owns a small business in downtown Scottsdale said, "I feel like I'm helping to kind of give back to this wonderful community to help build more businesses in the area and give more jobs to the local people."
Scottsdale is one of many American towns taking part in Small Business Saturday, a program sponsored by American Express that has been running for three years.
It reminds shoppers to check out what small businesses have to offer as opposed to mainstream department stores and it was designed to remind consumers to shop locally all year-round.
"We recognize that the revenue that we receive through business and sales taxes come from the small businesses that typically are local," Linda Walton, an economic development specialist with the city of Scottsdale, said.
She said this is Scottsdale's second year to participate in the program.
Store owners said it does help.
"We do see an increase in sales on Small Business Saturday. We do. So I think just getting the word out there and having people just remember us is what it's all about," said Bacha.
Near Fashion Square, the Artisan Market was set up with dozens of vendors and a group singing Christmas carols Saturday.
Several other small businesses also participated in Small Business Saturday all over Scottsdale and the Valley.
