Holyoke to enter Western Mass casino race

HOLYOKE, MA (WSHM) -

In what appears to be a reversal of position, Holyoke Mayor Alex Morse is set to unveil a proposal for a casino resort in his city.

The plans will be officially announced Monday morning, according to CBS 3 media partner Mass Live and The Republican.

The casino would be located at Mountain Park, which is on the south side of Mount Tom.

The park's owner is working with the same group that helped bring Mohegan Sun to Connecticut.

Morse had campaigned on opposing the idea of a casino being built at the Wyckoff Country Club.

Now, with all of the attention that Springfield is getting from its three proposals, it is reported that Morse is concerned about the economic impact a Springfield casino could have on his city.

Following last year's vote, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission is allowed to award three casino licenses across the state.

A casino in Western Massachusetts could be awarded in early 2014.
