Hartford police said a 15-year-old boy was home Monday afternoon when a burglar broke into his family's apartment and he was forced to fight him off.
Alex Resto said his mother had just left their apartment unit on Olgiby Drive for work and she did not lock the door.
"I knew something was going to happen, something wrong was going to happen, after I saw the guy," said Alex, who had stayed home from school.
The suspect punched teenager in the mouth, however the teenager was able to fight back, he told Eyewitness News.
"We were hitting each other and I backed up as fast as I can to try and just get away and call the cops and that's when he came in," Alex said.
The man grabbed Alex's hair, slammed the teenager's head into a wall and left a hole in the drywall, he told Eyewitness News.
"All the adrenaline from what was going on, I just didn't really feel it at first," Alex said.
The individual would eventually flee the house, police said. Police searched the area with a K-9, but officers were unable to locate the suspect.
"I'm kind of happy I was here because if anybody else was here, they could have been hurt," Alex said. "Or so many stuff could have been stolen."
Alex told Eyewitness News that he believes he suffered a minor concussion. He was still feeling the headache and after all that happened Monday, Alex doubts he's going to get any sleep.
Alex told Eyewitness News he hopes the housing authority will also do something to make sure his family has stronger locks on their doors.
