UConn looks to lease former prison

Posted: Updated:
MANSFIELD, CT (AP) -

A year after the last inmate left the Bergin Correctional Institution, the University of Connecticut is in talks with the state to lease the shuttered prison in Mansfield as it seeks out more space for offices and laboratories.

Bergin is one of three prisons the state has closed as crime drops and the inmate population shrinks. State officials say they're interested in leasing the space but want to retain control in case they need to use it later as a prison.

Bergin housed as many as 1,000 inmates before it closed in August 2011.

University spokesman Tom Breen tells The Associated Press it is in the early stages of talks that have focused on the length of the possible lease and how the space could be used.
