Would-be robber stabs customer in Hartford Rite Aid

HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -
Police in Hartford said one customer was stabbed at a Rite Aid on Sunday while she was trying to help employees detain a would-be robber in the store.
Police arrested Eliabner Maldonado in connection to the incident at the store, which is located on Franklin Avenue.
According to the arrest warrant, when one of the store clerks opened the cash register, Maldonado went behind the counter and attempted to grab all of the $20 bills from the drawer. Police said when the clerk became aware of what was happening, he grabbed Maldonado's hand and that's when the two began shoving each other, causing the register to fall to the floor and break apart.
Police said the clerk then tried to restrain Maldonado until police arrived, but Maldonado began to punch and kick the clerk in an attempt to release him.
Two customers then tried to assist the clerk in detaining Maldonado, police said, but that's when Maldonado pulled out a box cutter from his jacket pocket and began flailing it around.
At that point, police said, Maldonado stabbed one of the customers helping the clerk in the leg. She then began to punch Maldonado in an attempt for him to release the knife, which he did.
Another customer secured the knife so Maldonado wouldn't use it again.
They then released Maldonado thinking he would stop fighting, but police said he again tried to flee the store, and needed to be restrained again until police arrived.
On Monday, Maldonado went in front of a judge at Hartford Superior Court. He has been previously convicted in Connecticut for second-degree threatening in July where he received a one-year jail sentence.
Maldonado, who is currently on probation, was also arrested for a pair of robberies in his native Puerto Rico.
