New information is out about a state trooper accused of stealing money and jewelry from a crash victim.
Apparently, the theft was caught on the own trooper's dash cam video recorder and that video is now being used as evidence.
John A Scalesse, 49, of Orange, died when his motorcycle slammed into the rear end of another vehicle on Route 15 on Sept. 22. He was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital, where he died of his injuries.
In the video from the trooper's dash cam video recorder, firefighters can be seen around Scalesse and one of them was Fairfield Assistant Fire Chief Scott Bisson.
"As the firefighter cut the clothing off the person they came away with his license and a large sum of money on him and that was immediately handed out of ambulance to the troopers," Bisson said.
Following the fatal crash, family members determined that several items belonging to their loved one were missing, including jewelry, clothing and money.
State police conducted a lengthy investigation into the incident and found that the jewelry and $3,700 had never been logged by the trooper investigating the case, which was Aaron Huntsman, 43.
The 18-year veteran of the state police was arrested after he allegedly failed to log evidence from the fatal crash. According to court records, Huntsman at first said he didn't know where the gold chain was.
However, he then said it turned up in his car and he still denies he took the money even after troopers found it under his police cruiser's seat.
Huntsman did not answer at his home Wednesday. His neighbors were surprised.
"He seemed like a decent guy," said one neighbor, who wished not to be identified.
After turning himself into state police on Nov. 29, he was charged with two counts of third-degree larceny as well as interfering with police and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence.
According to the warrant, a male first responder's voice said "were you able to grab any ID under him?" Huntsman responded "just two cell phones so far."
A male voice at the scene starts talking about the money saying "I don't want the cash, put it back" because the victim was still alive, so the money stays with them.
Then, Huntsman said "Hey I'll take it, I'll take it as evidence." He is then seen walking back to his cruiser with the money.
In the warrant, the victim's father apparently called and told Huntsman he thought some money and jewelry were missing, but the trooper never told anyone.
Huntsman is expected to appear in Bridgeport Superior Court on Dec. 10.
