Connecticut State Police have canceled an Amber Alert for a missing Hartford 2-year-old child that was inside a stolen car. The child was found safe in Bristol.
State police said the suspect, who is believed to be Davon Mills, is now in custody. However, police are still searching for a second suspect.
An Amber Alert was issued around 5:30 p.m. after police said a burnt orange 2003 Cadillac STS with Luis Trinidad inside it was stolen from a home in the 2700 block of Main Street about 4 p.m.
"Everyone's looking for Potato. That's his nickname," said Kathy Luz Torres of Hartford. "If anyone seen him, he answers to Potato, has asthma doesn't speak well. He doesn't like strangers, so if you know please bring him home safe and sound."
The Cadillac was parked and running right outside a mini mart on Main Street with the baby boy belted in, in the back seat.
"It must have been about five seconds," said store clerk Brain Stewart. "I swear he went in the store, got whatever he was getting and walked out, his car was gone."
Hartford police immediately mobilized officers across the city while working closely with state police and located a burnt orange Cadillac STS on Asylum Avenue outside of Bushnell Park around 6 p.m. However, the vehicle was empty.
A search with a K-9 was conducted in the area of the park and police located Mills. However, a second suspect still has not been located as of late Thursday night.
"As for the second suspect, we know his whereabouts," said Hartford Police Lt. Brain Foley.
Bristol police located a child that matched the description of the missing child around 6:30 p.m. Hartford police confirmed that the child was Luis Trinidad.
"The Amber Alert helped on several levels. Several people approached us about seeing suspect car," Foley said. "Witnesses saw the vehicle and described the suspect and woman turned the child in."
Police are still trying to piece it all together.
"We don't believe any connection between the suspect and family at this point," Foley said.
Police said they do not believe that the suspects targeted the vehicle because there was a baby was inside.
