Two family members in Norwich were hospitalized early Friday morning after their home caught fire.
Four people were living in the three apartments in the Dudley Street home.
A mother living on the first floor of the home with her son and granddaughter were able to escape the burning home shortly after the fire broke out around 4 a.m. Fire officials said the blaze was contained to the second floor unit inside the home, which is where one of her sons was sleeping.
They called 911, and before first responders could arrive, they attempted to rescue the man from the burning home.
The call was especially significant for Assistant Great Plain Fire Chief Joe Winski - the trapped man is his nephew, and the others inside were also family members.
"My sister-in-law went upstairs. She saw the smoke and everything, you could hear my nephew on the other side saying he couldn't get out, very barely could speak and the smoke was pushing around the door," Winski said. "That's what she told me went back down stairs grabbed a bat, tried to get inside the door."
Finally his brother broke the door down and two Norwich police officers rescued the trapped man.
The young man, who is in his 30s, is now at the Bridgeport Hospital Burn Unit where he is in serious condition.
His mother is also in the hospital after she suffered from a stress-related heart attack after escaping the fire.
She's being treated at Yale-New Haven Hospital.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, however, it is not being considered suspicious.
