Luis Trinidad was in the back seat of a car that was stolen in Hartford.
HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -
A little boy from Hartford is back with his family after he was left in a running car that was stolen in front of a convenience store and one of the suspects, who stole the vehicle, appeared in court Friday.
Connecticut State Police issued an Amber Alert late Thursday afternoon, eventually finding the car in downtown Hartford and the little boy in Bristol.
A heavy police presence covered the Capitol region looking for little Luis Trinidad.
Police said his father left his car running with the baby buckled in the back seat as he ran into the Main Street store.
When he came out both his car and baby were gone.
Hartford police, Connecticut State Police and family members searched for the little boy.
Police discovered the orange Cadillac ditched near Bushnell Park, but the little boy wasn't in the car.
Police eventually arrested Davon Mills, 24, who is a man they believe was connected.
His family members told Eyewitness News he was one of two men that stole the car and said he must have been under the influence of drugs.
Around the same time, word came that the boy was in Bristol.
Family members said when Mills realized there was a child in the back seat, he dropped him off at a friend's house in Bristol.
The friend saw the Amber Alert and brought the child to the police station.
Police said that now that they are piecing it all together, they believe it was a random crime.
"We don't believe any connection between the suspect and the family at this point," said Hartford police Lt. Brian Foley.
Mills appeared in Hartford Superior Court Friday morning. He said "I love you" under his breath to his girlfriend in the gallery of the courtroom just moments before a judge set his bond at $750,000.
"It's very hard and stressful, but I have to stay strong for my kids," said Jessica Tourangeau, who is Mills's girlfriend. "And just let them know their dad needs help and he'll be home eventually."
Tourangeau and some family members of Mills appeared in court Friday and they personally apologized to the little boy's family. They said this incident happened after he took PCP, something he's addicted to.
"I don't think he's, he's realizing what's going on," said Monalisa Jackson, who is Mills's friend. "I think he was in another world."
According to court documents, Mills told officers he took the car because he was upset that the boy's father had left his son in the vehicle unattended. He decided to take the vehicle with the child.
Documents said he then drove to Bristol, where he is from and picked up two friends. He left Luis with a female friend, who was identified as Marilyn Colon, while taking his other friend, Jose Rivera, 35, to Bristol Hospital for a head injury he received earlier.
"This is not Davon. He is all about family. He is about his kids. He helps everybody out. He's not involved in the streets," Tourangeau said. "He just chose to hang out with the wrong people and to be on the wrong drug at the wrong time."
Police found Mills back in Hartford near Bushnell Park, where he had left the car a short time after trying to get into the Jingle Jam, which is a rap concert at the XL Center, and getting turned away.
At this point, no one else has been arrested in this case.
Police are still trying to determine if, and to what degree, Rivera was involved in all this.
