SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

CBS 3 Springfield is learning that MGM Resorts has bid on two South End properties in Springfield to add to the land they're hoping to build their resort casino on.

The city's procurement department told CBS 3 that the bidding opened last month for the former Zanetti School as well as the Armory building, both on Howard Street.

MGM is trying to acquire land in the South End for their resort casino proposal.

The city told CBS 3 that Blue Tarp Redevelopment, the real estate arm of MGM bid on the Zanetti School for $1.6 million.

They did the same for the old Armory building, which is right next door.

But another developer is also eying the former school - Colvest Group told CBS 3 that they bid $750,000 for the property with plans to put an office building there.

Although MGM is the highest bidder at this time, that doesn't mean they get the property.

From here an evaluation committee will look at each of those bids, make their recommendations and then city council will ultimately make the vote.

Carole Brennan, a spokesperson for MGM told CBS 3 that they are not going to comment beyond saying they are going to respect the city's process but this is an exciting time. They also said these two properties are an important part of their plans and they realize their historical significance in the city.

CBS 3 will have more details on CBS 3 Springfield news at 11.
