Police find vehicle believed to be involved in deadly hit-and-run

MIDDLETOWN, CT (WFSB) -
Police officials in Middletown have confirmed officers have located a vehicle that may have been involved in a deadly hit-and-run over the weekend that killed a 15-year-old girl.
Investigators also stated that they are questioning persons of interest in the incident.
Students returned to school Monday for the first time since 15-year-old Cailyn Bassett, of Clinton, was hit by a vehicle as she was walking along Saybrook Road in Middletown around 5:45 p.m. Friday.
"She tried to get up every now and then, not every week," said grandfather Jim Phillips. "But, she had been up a few times in the past."
Cailyn, a 10th-grade student at the Morgan School, was pronounced dead a short time later.
According to her grandmother, Cailyn had gone to the vocational agricultural program in Middletown, loved to write and was active in her church. She had permission from her mother to take the bus up to Middletown to visit some friends from the program on Friday night when she was hit by a car.
Those investigators are now combing that vehicle for clues.
"The first and most important would be that I love you very much," Jim Phillips said.
Now her family is praying someone will step up and provide information into the deadly hit-and-run.
"I would really like it if the person who did this would come forward, and at least we would know," said Debbie Phillips.
Counselors were brought to Morgan School to talk to both teachers and students Monday.
"Kind of redirecting the kids and helping them understand that it's OK to express their grief in lots of different ways," said Clinton Superintendent of Schools Jack Cross.
Friends of Cailyn said she was "awesome person" and they were happy to "know her."
"I hope she's resting up there," said George Cassell, who is a freshman at Morgan School. "I hope she rests in peace."
Visiting hours for Cailyn will be held at the Church of The Open Door on East Main Street in Clinton on Dec. 15 from 9:30-11 a.m. with a memorial service at 11 a.m.
Middletown police continue to search for the driver who fled the scene after the accident. The department has obtained surveillance video of the accident.
"We do have the person that was operating the vehicle that night and we are speaking with them as well as other people that may have knowledge or have been involved someway," said Middletown Police Lt. Heather Desmond.
Anyone with information about the hit-and-run is asked to call Middletown police at 860-344-3264.
