Police have identified the man who died after being dragged from a car by a suspected impaired driver Saturday and have arrested who they said is responsible.
Jesus Jimenez, 66, died Saturday, about three hours after the collision, according to police.
Investigators said it started as a fender bender at the intersection of Northern and 19th avenues just after the lunch hour.
"The accident was not a very serious accident. In fact, the damage appeared to be minor," said Phoenix Police Department Sgt. Tommy Thompson.
Thompson said Isacc Richard Quesada, 20, of Phoenix, was driving a four-door white Nissan Altima and rear-ended Jimenez, who was driving a Scion XB. Jimenez got out to talk to Quesada, but Quesada took off.
"And the driver of the Scion reached inside the vehicle and next thing he knew he was being dragged southbound on 19th Avenue," said Thompson.
Police said Jimenez was dragged hundreds of feet toward Augusta Street when the driver swerved into oncoming traffic, hitting a black Nissan Maxima with a 41-year-old mom driving, an 18-year-old daughter in the back seat and her 1 1/2-year-old daughter also in the back seat. The baby was buckled into the proper safety child seat and received injuries to her face, according to police.
"It was pretty bad. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy," said Boris Baybachayev.
He owns B's Barber Shop nearby and saw what happened next. The suspected drunken driver tried to run when witnesses tackled him.
"They just tackled him right away, and he kept trying to get up and nobody let him get up," said Baybachayev.
Police got Quesada in custody as they arrived, but then everyone had to be taken to the hospital with injuries that were non-life-threatening, except for Jimenez. He was in extremely critical condition when transported to a local hospital and later died Saturday night, according to police.
Police said Jimenez's wife was also in the car and another female may have been in the car with the suspected drunken driver. It appears that she got away on foot.
Quesada is charged with nine counts including manslaughter, aggravated assault, hit-and-run and endangerment, according to police. He was taken into jail after he was released from the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Thompson said Quesada was impaired at the time of the crash. Police said they found an open bottle of beer in the passenger front seat of Quesada's vehicle.
A hospital blood test showed Quesada had a blood alcohol level of 0.237 along with the presence of marijuana and cocaine, according to a court document.
Quesada's grandmother, Josephine Harbarger, issued a statement on behalf of the family. It said, "Our prayers and thoughts go out to the family. My grandson is not a bad person. He's a good boy and he would never intentionally hurt someone."
