A man accused of killing his wife in New Fairfield appeared in court Monday.
Police said Robert Bell called 911 Saturday night and told the dispatcher he had an argument with his wife and shot her several times.
According to the police report, Robert Bell shot Svetlana Bell in the chest four times after he said she came at him with a knife around 7:30 p.m.
When police arrived, he was standing in his living room, while his daughter performing CPR on his wife.
Svetlana Bell was a strings teacher at Cider Mill in Wilton. She also ran an after-school music program in New Fairfield about four years ago.
Superintendent Gary Richards released a statement Monday in regards to the tragedy.
"We were deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death of Cider Mill music teacher Svetlana Bell. Svetlana had been a member of our staff since 2006. I wanted to let you know that we will have counseling services available as we process the loss of our friend and colleague. At this time we have no information about services, but we will make this known as it becomes available. I know I speak for us all when I say that our thoughts and prayers are with Svetlana's family."
Crisis counselors were made available to talk to students Monday.
Svetlana Bell's colleagues were also stunned by the news.
"I am shocked and confused because they didn't know how or why," said Kay Fabrizo, who is a teacher's aid in Wilton. "Just that she was gone."
Police have not said what prompted the argument between Robert Bell and his wife.
"I know she was great with the third graders," Fabrizo said. "She was awesome."
Some parents finding out Monday were emotional over the loss.
"I'm very shaken by this tragedy. This has hit our community, our children," said a woman, who did not want to be identified. "It's a senseless loss."
Robert Bell, who was a photographer at Beta Square before he retired, is being held on $750,000 bond and is scheduled to return to Danbury Superior Court on Jan. 7.
