Firefighters in Manchester spent the early morning hours battling a blaze at an apartment building on Charter Oak Street.
Officials said they were called to the Huntington Commons Apartments, which is a four-unit building at 340 Charter Oak St., shortly before 1 a.m.
When crews arrived, they found fire and heavy smoke coming from the roofline of the rear of the building.
"They heard popping, didn't know what it was," said Samantha Ringstone of Manchester. "I kind of ignored it since there are woods behind us, trees breaking. They figured it was that. When he (her boyfriend) stepped outside, he saw the fire starting."
No one was injured during the fire.
Officials said the building was uninhabitable because the roof structure was weakened and the electrical system was damaged during the fire.
"Our concern right now is that the fire affected the roof assembly," said Manchester Fire Chief Robert Bycholski. "The roof itself and the electrical system is compromised."
A sign was set up at the front and rear entrance of the building to prevent residents from coming inside.
The Red Cross is assisting the 13 residents from the apartments with temporary housing.
"With the holidays coming up, with Christmas and everything, it's just now what - what are we going to do? Who's going to be where?" Ringstone said. "So we're not entirely sure what is going to happen now."
The fire marshal has been called to the scene to investigate the cause, officials said. It was not immediately apparent what started the fire.
