Middletown police are investigating a fatal dump truck crash where the vehicle rolled over on Route 66 Tuesday afternoon.
According to police, the dump truck was traveling eastbound on Route 66 just after 1:30 p.m. when the driver swerved for an unknown reason and went off the road. The truck went down an embankment near the Goodwill Store and the CT Beverage Mart.
The truck rolled over onto its driver side, police said. The vehicle rolled into a 2002 Jaguar X-type that was in the plaza parking lot.
A load of gravel that the vehicle was carrying also spilled out during the crash, police said.
Route 66 has been closed between Camp Street and Boston Road due to the crash.
The driver Charles Marshall, 53, of Bethlehem died at the scene, police said. The driver of the 2002 Jaguar X-type was uninjured, police said.
The Middletown Police Department is investigating the cause of the crash. Anyone with any information is asked to call police at 860-344-3264.
