Winter weather makes for big mess in western Connecticut
By WFSB Staff
TORRINGTON, CT (WFSB) -
Residents in Litchfield County were left digging out and drying off Thursday morning after a storm left plenty of snow and rain.
Many of the main roads in the county including in towns such as Torrington were cleared by Thursday afternoon. However, crews were now focused on cleaning off secondary roads in the area, which were covered in slush.
The Northwest Hills area was hit hard Wednesday by a nor'easter. First, about 5 to 6 inches hit Litchfield County. Then, the snow changed to sleet and then, rain, which created a messy commute Thursday morning.
Connecticut Department of Transportation plow crews trucked up and down Route 202 in Torrington early Thursday morning, where they cleared the snow-packed roads before the morning commute.
"It is slippery, slick, definitely icy," said Harrison Conway of Torrington. "Got to be careful, give yourself a couple of extra minutes this morning."
Steven Fidorowicz was out since 9:30 p.m. Wednesday plowing out homes and businesses. When he stopped for some coffee, he told Eyewitness News about the road conditions
"I was busy, we did our commercial lots first, then started residential," Fidorowicz said. "I was in Litchfield, pretty bad there, lot of wind and snow up that way."
As the rain continued to soak the snow, residents went to work. Some used snow blowers to open up their driveways, while others with shovels slowly got after it, one heavy heaping at a time.
"It's really heavy, the snow is like a sponge, essentially, white slush, it's back-breaking work, but it's OK," said Henry Haburey Jr. of Torrington. "You know all those years you were supposed to help your parents and they did what you were supposed to do, it's payback time."
Because of snow and the rain, Litchfield County residents were warned to really take care of it and get it cleaned up. When the temperatures drop Thursday night, there is the potential for re-freezing and that could really slick up the driveways, walkways, and of course, the roads.
