Laws are put in place to keep the public safe. But, some of these strange rules and regulations on the books have us scratching our heads. Did you know that chasing fish in a city park is against the law in New Orleans?
Also, a person could land in jail for up to 10 years if they steal another person's alligator? It is also illegal to tie an alligator to a fire hydrant in New Orleans.
All cited laws are real and currently in effect.
In the State of Louisiana, it is a crime for fans at a sports event to insult or disparage the players.
In New Orleans, those marching in the Mardi Gras parade are banned from throwing spears, bomb bags, insects, life or dead rodents or fish.
In Louisiana, a chef who prepares jambalaya in "the traditional manner" is excused from following the health code.
In Jefferson Parish, garbage must be freshly cooked before being fed to pigs.
In Louisiana, it is prohibited to stage a sham wrestling event.
In Terrebone Parish, it is a crime to use silly string at a parade.
In New Orleans, it is unlawful for supermarkets to "inflate or blow" meat.
In Louisiana, one could possibly land in jail for 20 years upon urinating in the city's water supply.
It is a $500 fine to instruct a pizza delivery man to deliver a pizza to your friend without them knowing.
It is illegal to rob a bank and then shoot at the bank teller with a water pistol.
Biting someone with your natural teeth is "simple assault," while biting someone with your false teeth is "aggravated assault.
One could land in jail for up to a year for making a false promise.
Every time a person is seriously burned, he must report the injury to the fire marshal.
In Jefferson Parish, minors may not go to businesses with coin-operated foosball machines unless accompanied by an adult.
Also in Jefferson Parish, No one may pour a drink out on the ground at any drive-in movie.
In New Orleans, it is illegal to do any kind of fancy bicycle riding in town. Also, horses are not allowed to be tied to a tree on a public highway.
Television reporters may not throw candy to the crowd during a parade in New Orleans. Also, it is illegal to tie an alligator to a fire hydrant.
In New Orleans, one may not host a game of marbles at Lafayette Square unless he or she first obtains a written permit from the parkway and park commission.
Here are some other laws in New Orleans:
"Mardi Gras Beads" may not be thrown from a third story window.
It is illegal to practice voodoo in the city limits.
Snakes are not allowed within 200 yards of the Mardi Gras parade route.
"No Smoking" signs shall be placed on all floats used during a parade.
Condoms may not be thrown from parade floats during Mardi Gras.
It is illegal for a woman to drive a car unless her husband is waving a flag in front of it. Source
In Port Allen, it is illegal for a person to predict another's future. Also in Port Allen, only two people may picket on a sidewalk at a time, and they must stay at least five feet apart at all times.
In Sulphur, drive-thru liquor stores are outlawed, it is illegal to have sex with a cow, it is illegal to be an alcoholic, and saying obscene things on the telephone is illegal.
