Sawyer School closing, leavings students scrambling

They've invested thousands of dollars, and now students said the school that was supposed to give them a degree has instead shut its doors.

Students and staff said the Sawyer School with locations in Hartford, Hamden and Bridgeport is now closed.

Olga Diaz was five weeks away from completing her classes at the Sawyer School's Hartford location. She's been going to school there since last February, has a 4.0 GPA, and already had an internship at Hartford hospital lined up to complete her training as a medical assistant.

All this was done to give her 1-year-old daughter a better life.

"I'm a single mom, my daughter cries when she doesn't want to sleep and I'm up studying," Diaz said. "Like any other single mom in that school like any other person working hard to feed their kids, and this is what they do to us?"

Diaz said the program cost her $22,000, with $9,000 of which she still owes through student loans.

She said she had to find out through Facebook that the school abruptly shut its doors Friday. When Diaz said she went there to see for herself, she says her teachers were crying and packing up their books, now left without a job.

Nobody answered when Eyewitness News knocked on the door Monday or when the station called the school's main campus in Rhode Island.

"I am very troubled by the sudden closing of the Butler Business School and Sawyer Schools," said U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal in a statement Monday. "And your company's silence to date as to how the schools will address your current students' needs."

Blumenthal went on to say he wants the school to reimburse the students or help them find an equivalent education at no additional cost.

The students and teachers are planning on holding a rally Wednesday morning at the Sawyer School in Hartford to try to get some answers.

Teachers told Eyewitness News that the Connecticut Department of Higher Education is working on a way to help students out.

If you are currently enrolled at a Sawyer School, you should give them a call at 1-800-842-0229.
