With the New Year comes new fares for Metro North and Shoreline East.
Rail customers reacted to the rising ticket prices Tuesday morning.
"They're already pretty steep to begin with," said Taylor Campano of Hamden.
Starting Tuesday, it will now run you roughly 5 percent more when taking Metro North's New Haven line into New York City or traveling between Connecticut stations.
"Actually I didn't even notice it because I don't know what the prices are otherwise," said Melissa Sanders of Middletown.
Last year, a one way peak ticket from New Haven to Grand Central would cost you $19.50. Now, it will go up a dollar more to $20.50.
For those commuting into the city constantly for work, last year a monthly train ticket cost $415. For 2013, it will go up to $436 a month.
"It doesn't impact us, we're seniors," said Birgitta O'Brien of Marlborough. "But I can see people traveling every day, with the economy the way it is, it doesn't help them, does it?"
It is the second straight year of riders will be seeing an increase. It was about 5 percent last year, about 5 percent this year, and they'll see another increase next year as well.
Part of it is to have the riders help pay for the new trains that were put in recently.
"The newer trains are so much nicer, the seats, the others you would slide," O'Brien said. "These are great."
In addition to the Metro North's New Haven line service, Shoreline East riders saw the rail fare increase.
The Connecticut Department of Transportaton sets the rates. It said over the past eight years its seen its operating expenses grow by 12 percent due to inflation.
"The new fare structure is reasonable and will more evenly share operating costs between our passengers and taxpayers," said DOT Commissioner James P. Redeker. " "We are also pleased that we were able to come up with this alternative to much more aggressive fare increases or service reductions. "
Some rail customers said the increased fees will not deter them from using the mode of transportation.
"I'll still use it probably," Campano said. "It's the only means of transportation I have."
