WASHINGTON, D.C. (WFSB) -
Democrat Elizabeth Esty was sworn in Thursday and she will replace Chris Murphy as the representative for Connecticut's 5th Congressional District.
Esty was one of 61 women who were sworn in Thursday, which is the largest number of women in a party caucus in the history of the House of Representatives.
"I'm also committed to working to promote economic growth throughout the district by reinvigorating manufacturing, helping small businesses, improving education, and making investments in our transportation and infrastructure," she said in a statement Thursday. "It's a privilege to work on behalf of the people of the 41 cities and towns of the 5th District and to make sure that the voices of all of our communities are heard in Washington."
Esty joins John Larson, Jim Himes, Joe Courtney and Rosa DeLauro, who were re-elected, and also sworn in Thursday.
During her oath of office, Esty also talked about the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School where 20 children and six adults were killed before the gunman shot himself.
"The recent tragedy in Newtown has irrevocably changed the lives of people in that community, and it's been felt across the state and across the country," she said in a statement Thursday. "I'm committed to ensuring that the community of Newtown has the support it needs to heal, and that, moving forward, we take comprehensive action to help keep families safe in every community and to prevent such horrific tragedies from occurring in the future."
