Amherst family homeless after fire

An Amherst family of five is homeless tonight after a fire destroyed their home on Leveret Road.

Firefighters say the fire started around 5:20 p.m. in the home's attached garage.

The two adults and three children got out of the house safely. Firefighters say one person might have minor burns but didn't need to go to the hospital.

The Red Cross is helping the family find housing because their home is uninhabitable.

The Northampton Fire Department assisted the Amherst Fire Department at the scene while the Belchertown Fire Department helped make sure there was coverage throughout town.
