PEORIA, AZ (CBS5) -

The pilot of a homebuilt airplane escaped injury Thursday night when he was forced to bring his aircraft down northeast of Lake Pleasant, authorities said.

The pilot's wife had reported him missing when he failed to return from his flight, FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said.

For some reason the pilot was unable to bring the plane down at the airport and landed elsewhere.

Officers with the Arizona Department of Public Safety initially launched their helicopter to search for the plane.

Maricopa County sheriff's deputies said the man is safe. He was the only person aboard.

Peoria police and the FAA are investigating. There is no word yet on what went wrong.

No other information is currently available.
