An increased police presence greeted students at Putnam Middle School on Monday morning after three bomb threats were made against the school.
In a letter sent home to parents Friday, school principal Teri Bruce said the bomb threat was made for Monday and extra precautions were taken to make sure all the children are safe.
In addition to extra police at the school, students' backpacks and bags were checked as they entered school, and school staff will be the only ones allowed to use a connecting corridor between the middle and elementary school.
"We contacted the Putnam police," said Putnam Superintendent of Schools William Hull. "We've had police bomb dogs in to search the building and we also have increased police presence."
Bruce said she believes Friday's threat was a copycat to earlier incidents, however, they take each and every incident seriously.
A parent, who contacted Channel 3, said this is the third threat and that two additional bomb threats were made Monday and Wednesday of last week.
Parents told Eyewitness News that they learned about the threats through recorded messages. No matter how they learned about the threats that the parents said they just want the threats to stop.
"It's frustrating as a parent because on the one hand you want them to take it seriously and I'm glad that they are," said Leigh Anne Cumberland of Putnam. "But, it's also frustrating because this isn't funny."
Parents admit there was a time when this type of threat, wouldn't bother them, but say after the Newtown school shooting, everything is so different now.
"Who knows. The first one was a letter in found in the girls bathroom, the second one was written on the girls bathroom wall, and the third one was written on the boys bathroom wall, from what I've been told," said one unidentified parent. "But you know. It's just a threat made like that."
Police said one juvenile has been arrested in connection with the first bomb threat, but the individual's name was not released, due to their age. However, the other two threats are under investigation.
Anyone with information regarding the incidents is asked to contact the Putnam Police Department at 860-928-6565.
