A nine-year veteran of the East Hartford Police Department was arrested in connection with a domestic violence incident involving his ex-girlfriend over the weekend.
Patrol Officer Juma Jones, 35, is accused of going to his ex-girlfriend's home in Hartford Friday against her wishes after he called her consistently for 48 hours.
According to court documents, Jones claims he stopped by the residence to "return several pieces of Tupperware."
Jones, who was in possession of a police-issued handgun, was arrested and charged with first-degree criminal trespass and disorderly conduct.
His attorneys believe this is a big misunderstanding that Jones' ex-girlfriend wants to put behind her.
"My understanding is the complainant believes, from what I understand, has moved out of state," said attorney Sal Bonanno during Jones' arraignment Monday at Hartford Superior Court. "And the complainant I think has a desire not to pursue the case. We do have a case for the time being, needless to say."
His ex-girlfriend told police she "never told Jones her address and does not know how he found out where she lives."
The gun was never taken of Jones' personal car, but had to be given back to the department, his attorneys said.
Jones, who is under a protective order, is currently on administrative leave and the chief has initiated an internal affairs investigation.
East Hartford Mayor Marcia A. Leclerc told Eyewitness News that "these are serious allegations, and we take them very seriously."
Eyewitness News has learned that Jones was thrown out of the Hartford Police Academy in 2001 for a domestic incident.
According to court documents, Jones and his ex-girlfriend were dating for six months, broke up before Christmas and have no children together.
This is the second arrest of an East Hartford officer in less than two months.
According to the Connecticut's United States Attorney's office, Andrew W. Nielsen, 48, is accused of having several DVDs containing child pornography from a foreign company shipped to his South Windsor home from November 2010 to April 2011.
Nielsen was placed on administrative leave after he was charged with possession of child pornography.
Residents of East Hartford reacted to the news of a second arrest in the police department.
"I'd say it's all over," said Normand Cook of East Hartford. "It is all over town, not just East Hartford. It's everywhere."
