One person died and a police officer was injured in a two-vehicle crash that involved a police cruiser in Mesa on Tuesday morning.
Mesa police said an elderly man driving a green minivan tried to cross Main Street at 80th Street and was T-boned on the driver's side by the eastbound police cruiser about 7:20 a.m.
The van's driver was ejected and died at the scene, police said. The officer, identified as Helen Simmons, was trapped inside her police cruiser. Once freed, she was rushed to the hospital, where she will be kept overnight for observation. She's expected to be OK.
Simmons is a 23-year veteran with the Mesa Police Department.
The victim's identity has not yet been released.
Mesa Fire Department and medical units and Rural/Metro responded to the crash.
The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office will spearhead the investigation.
