Officials from Pratt & Whitney said it is laying off 200 workers here in Connecticut.
Pratt & Whitney officials said the layoffs, which are effective immediately, come from both the East Hartford and Middletown locations in Connecticut.
Officials at Pratt & Whitney said in all, there will be a total of 350 salaried positions eliminated.
"I can feel the mood in there is somber," said Petri Little of East Hartford. "Losing a job at this time is not going to be good for anyone."
In December, nearly 100 local jobs were cut.
"It helps with the economy," said Sharon Hudson of East Hartford. "I don't know why they're laying off so many people."
Pratt & Whitney plays a big role in East Hartford's tax base. Mayor Marcia Leclerc said the number of local layoffs is getting alarming.
"We really want them to make sure they have a presence here in East Hartford and they're committed to it," she said.
The company employs around 10,000 people here in the state, and Pratt & Whitney said these layoffs are just a step in securing its future. Locals here are hoping east Hartford remains a part of it.
"They're aware that they need to make some transitions in order to gain some strength and I believe that in the end, they'll be better off and we'll come back to full force," Leclerc said.
