The adoptive parents of a 4-year-old girl have been arrested after schools officials noticed bruising on the child - injuries the parents blamed on "normal childhood mishaps," according to investigators.
The Prescott Police Department said they found round bruises on the child's cheek and scratches on her neck, face and ears on Tuesday. The bruises on her cheek were so deep, they could be seen from inside her mouth, police said.
Police interviewed Jerome C. Mitchell, 60, and his wife, Hermina Ibarra, 59, and both denied noticing any significant bruising on the child. Investigators said the pair showed very little concern about their daughter.
The couple was arrested and booked into Yavapai County Jail on felony child abuse charges.
The 4-year-old and her 2-year-old brother are now in custody of Child Protective Services.
