The man who triggered an Amber Alert in New Haven after taking his daughter from her babysitter was arraigned Thursday afternoon.
Police said Robert Williamson was involved in a custody battle with his ex-girlfriend when he barged into an apartment, taking the 1-year-old girl.
"He did go upstairs and take the baby from the crib," the prosecutor said at New Haven Superior Court Thursday.
The babysitter, who was home at the time, said that she was pushed out of the way. However, she said she did not see a handgun on WIlliamson.
Police said Williamson, who has no legal custody of his daughter, then called the girl's mother and threatened to kill her and himself.
"He called me and told me he was going to kill the...himself and the baby," mother Charlene Wilson told Eyewitness News. "I lost it."
Williamson took the child, who had no socks or clothing on, to his grandmother's home in West Haven, police said.
Friends and family helped police locate Williamson and he later surrendered at a local liquor store located on the New Haven/West Haven line a few hours later.
The girl was unharmed and returned to her mother.
"He obviously wanted to see her daughter," said Williamson's defense attorney. "He cooperated with police with returning the child"
According to police, Williamson suffers from bipolar disorder as well as other mental health issues.
Williamson was arrested and charged with first-degree kidnapping, home invasion, risk of injury to a child, custodial interference and criminal violation of a restraining order.
Following his appearance Thursday, Williamson had his bond raised to $750,000.
According to court documents, he has previously pleaded guilty to charges of risk of injury to a minor and second-degree breach of peace. He served prison time for second-degree burglary and criminal possession of a firearm.
One unidentified friend of Williamson called him "a good man."
"I know him, I know him. I grew up with him," the man told Eyewitness News. "I don't know the nature of the crime and he's a good man. That's all I want to say."
