The former pastor of a church in Bridgeport is facing federal charges after receiving large amounts of methamphetamines from the West coast.
Kevin Wallin, 61, was arrested at his home in Waterbury earlier this month after federal authorities said he was involved in an alleged drug operation.
"The whole street was filled with cops and they took some guy out with handcuffs," said one unidentified neighbor of Wallin. "They were taking bags from the house."
Before his arrest, Wallin was a pastor at St. Augustine's for almost 10 years until 2011 when he left the church for health-related issues.
According to federal authorities, Wallin made six purchases of methamphetamines from California between Sept. 2012 and Jan. 2013. The Meth was shipped to Connecticut where it could be sold.
"Monsignor Kevin Wallin's arrest comes with a sense of shock and concern," a statement from the Bridgeport Diocese to Eyewitness News.
Eyewitness News learned late Thursday that Wallin was selling some of the drugs out of a video store he was running in North Haven after he left the church.
"During his sabbatical, the Diocese became concerned about Msgr. Wallin's well being and has reached out to him," according to statement from the Bridgeport Diocese. "To date, he has not spoken directly with diocesan officials."
One of his parishioners reacted to the news.
"He was so kind to the kids," said Yomara Contreras, who attended St. Augustine's during Wallin's tenure. "He was always telling good stories, really funny."
Since leaving St. Augustine's, Wallin was not reassigned and his priestly duties were suspended in May of 2012.
"The Diocese stands ready to help as it has throughout the past two years," according to statement from the Bridgeport Diocese. "We ask for prayers for Msgr. Wallin during the difficult days ahead for him."
