Gaming Commission denies four casino extensions

BOSTON, MA (WSHM) -

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission has denied four requests for extensions following Tuesday's deadline for phase one applications.

Good Sam's Casino, WM Development Company formerly known as Paper City Development, The city of Chicopee and The Seafan Trust all filed for those requests for waivers.

During Thursday's meeting, the Commission outlined the criteria in which it would consider granting an extension. After evaluating each request for waiver separately, the commissioners decided that none of the reasons provided were sufficient enough for them to vote in favor.

Holyoke Mayor Alex Morse sent a letter directly to the gaming commission prior to the meeting voicing his disapproval of the extension pertaining to his city. After the ruling he released a statement which reads in part:

"This is great news for Holyoke. I look forward to shifting the conversation towards one that focuses on regional cooperation and regional mitigation, as a casino in Western Massachusetts will affect all of us..."

CBS 3 reached out to Mayor Michael Bissonnette who said, "I remain intrigued by the Cabotville fight and welcome serious discussion with any qualified developer/operator. Such a transformative waterfront project in an urban setting that brings jobs and revenue will always merit my attention."

There are now 11 applicants moving forward in the state's casino process. In Western Mass Mohegan Sun, Hard Rock International, MGM and Penn National Gaming are in the running.
