Tips to keep your home warm in frigid weather

The temperature is taking a precipitous dip in the Midstate. The National Weather Center predicts overnight lows in the teens. The wind chill will make it feel more like 5 degrees.

It's more important than ever to make sure your heating system is up to the task of keeping your home comfortably warm. Channel 4 News talked to a heating expert for tips that can not only keep you and your family warm, but safe as well.

Jamie Sellers, a heating technician with The Lee Company, told Channel 4 News the first rule to keep your heating system humming is to stay ahead of the game.

"You always want to have the heating system maintained whether it's a heat pump or a gas furnace," said Sellers.

Just like changing the oil in your car on a regular basis to keep your engine running smoothly, there are steps you can take to ensure your heating system is running at peak efficiency.

"Filter changes, make sure they are changed 30-60-90 days, every home is different, but 30 days is the norm," said Sellers.

You might find that using a refrigerant may seem odd in the winter, but it's a necessity if you have a heat pump.

"The heat pump, unlike a gas furnace, uses that refrigerant with the compressor to pour heat out of the air, and put it in the house. Just the opposite of what an air conditioner does in the summer time," said Sellers.

Sellers said basic maintenance will keep you from being caught in the cold.
