New Haven police said the owner of a store was shot to death Tuesday morning.
Officers were called to the Orchard Market at 738 Orchard St. around 10:50 a.m.
When they arrived, police said officers found the store owner, Abdul L. Rawas, 55, suffering from a gunshot wound to his arm and his back. He was rushed to Yale-New Haven Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
"He was a very nice man, he was nice to everyone, all the kids around. He was kind to me," said a woman, who lives near the store. "Ever since I moved here he's just been a good man. This is unbelievable."
While the investigation is still in its early stages, police said they are centering the investigation around the possibility that this was a robbery.
There's no information about any potential suspects, but police are reviewing security footage from inside the store.
According to customers, Rawas has a brother and had a birthday on Feb. 1.
People who live in the area say they send their kids to this market every day but are now rethinking that.
"This is going to make me change my mind about a lot of things," said one woman. "This was really close."
Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call police at 203-946-6316 or the New Haven Police "Tips Line" at 203-946-2875.
