State representative wants panic buttons in schools

PORTLAND,CT (WFSB) -

One state lawmaker is proposing panic buttons inside all the schools in Connecticut.

State Rep. Christie Carpino, who represents Portland and Cromwell, wants to be "pro-active and make schools safe for our children."

The system will require every public school, elementary or secondary, to install a panic system that she believes will protect against threats and make schools safer.

"If the Newtown tragedy has taught us anything, it is that we need to protect our precious children," said Carpino, who is on the state's education committee, in a statement Tuesday. "We need to talk action."

Carpino said she wants a possible public hearing on issue of panic buttons at schools.

Adam Lanza had two pistols and an AR-15 when he entered Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14 and in just a matter of minutes, he fired multiple rounds, killing 20 children and six adults. Before the school shooting, he shot his mother four times.
