Officials with the State Department of Motor Vehicles said that the 16-year-old driver critically injured in an Avon crash Wednesday night only had a learner's permit.
According to DMV officials, Gary Wright was issued a learner's permit in March 2012 and was eligible to take his driver's test in September. However, DMV officials said, it's unknown if he actually took the test or did so but didn't pass.
The vehicle somehow went out of control and struck a utility pole on Lovely Street around 10:30 p.m., according to police. The impact of the crash was so intense that the vehicle nearly split in half.
In addition to the Wright, two other teenage passengers, who have been identified as Frank O'Connor, 18 and Michael Follert, 19, were in the car and were also injured, police said.
Emergency officials said Wright and Follert needed to be extricated from the vehicle and then were both airlifted to Hartford Hospital via LIFE STAR medical helicopters.
Wright was then brought to Connecticut Children's Medical Center and is listed in critical condition. Follert was listed in stable condition at Hartford Hospital and O'Connor was brought to the hospital with minor injuries and was discharged Thursday morning.
"I hope he pulls through," said Keith Wilson, who is a junior at Canton High School. "If anyone can, it's him."
Students told Eyewitness News that Wright was a "cool kid" who attended Canton High School before recently dropping out.
"I didn't know. That's crazy," said Alex MacBain, who is a junior at Canton High School. "It's a bad mistake. I feel sorry for him. Sorry it had to happen at such a young age."
The car is owned by Beth Wright. Officers add they're investigating whether charges could be filed.
Police are looking into whether speed, alcohol or texting were factors in the crash.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Anyone with any information is asked to call the Avon Police Department at 860-409-4200.
Avon police said there have been 10 accidents on Lovely Street total in 2012, all of which did not result in any injuries.
The DMV commission met Thursday to discuss safer teen driving and a new device allowing parents to go online and monitor their children's speed.
They also discussed a new bill that would allow teens to drive their siblings around.
As a result of the crash, police said power was knocked out to about 100 residents for about four hours. Lovely Street remained closed between Blueberry Road and Helena Drive overnight while officials investigated the crash, but the road has since reopened.
