Internet bullying has become a topic of huge debate in recent years, but one Nashville family says Metro Nashville Public Schools isn't taking the situation seriously.
They say their son has been the subject of bullies for two straight years now, and after his second assault was recorded and posted on Facebook, they pulled him out of school and asked Metro for a transfer.
But, two weeks later, they still haven't been offered a solution.
"They tagged Joseph in the video, so it showed up on Joseph's page and that's when people started commenting on it," said mother Melissa Gray.
The beating happened two weeks ago after a basketball game, when Gray's son was cornered in a school parking lot and attacked, with his fellow students egging it on.
Gray said she had no idea it had even happened until the next day, when the video went viral, and her son's middle school principal called the house.
"They said, 'Do you know about the assault?' And I said, 'What assault?' That's when he proceeded to tell me that students had come forward with video tapes, and they had reviewed the school surveillance. They saw that there were at least two students involved," Gray said.
Unfortunately, the mother wasn't surprised. She said her son's bullying started last year with verbal abuse. Then, in November, it escalated to an assault.
They asked for a transfer then, but it was denied.
"Because Joseph shoved back. When the kid came after him, Joseph did shove him," Gray said.
This time, the 13-year-old simply tried to retreat.
Now, Gray said she's not forcing her son to go back. He has already missed nine days, and the family is still waiting in limbo, wondering what's next.
"We told the principal, 'He's not coming back here. So something has to be done, because he has to go to school.' He said he would start calling everybody - school board and everybody, and he did make a phone call," Gray said.
The principal of the student's current school and the one to where he wants to transfer have both signed off on the transfer.
However, it all has to be approved by central office, where the case is still under review.
