Father-daughter duo return home from being in battle zone

VASSAR, MI (WNEM) -
Far too often we line the streets, mourning a soldier we've lost. That, however, wasn't the case Sunday morning.
"They need this kind of welcome, because not only do they sacrifice, but their families sacrifice while they're over there," said Judy Adams as she anxiously awaited the return of two Mid- Michigan soldiers from the battle zone.
Shannon Larrison knows what sacrifice is all about. Two people very close to her returned home Sunday to Vassar safe and sound after fighting in Afghanistan.
"I had a lot of support here," Shannon said.
To the surprise of Sgt. Timothy Larrison and Spc. Katelyn Larrison, all that "support" was secretly awaiting their arrival this morning.
"I was so excited to see her [Katelyn's] reaction, and she immediately started shaking and tears came down her eyes, it was the best," Shannon added.
Local VFW's, the American Legion, and the Patriot Guard all were ready to honor their sacrifice.
"Just seeing the support and the flags, it was bigger than I imagined," explained Larrison.
"Oh man, a lot of people, it was very exciting, it's nice to be welcomed home," added Spec. Shannon Larrison.
The two being home is not only a relief, it's historic.
"To my knowledge, there's never, in the history of the armed forces, been a father-daughter team deployed in any combat. You're the first," Tim Adams, another person who wanted to welcome the two combat soldiers home.
One would think their time overseas was torture for Shannon Larrison, the wife and mom waiting stateside.
"I felt better knowing that he was with her most of the time. And they don't let us know when bad things happen," Shannon explained.
But Sgt. Larrison says thanks to loved ones back home, he and his daughter made it just fine.
"The care packages, the letters, it really does mean a lot to the troops overseas, on the mission and it makes it worth," Sgt. Larrison told the group of loved ones, friends, and other community supporters.
And now that they're back, it was time to celebrate their unimaginable sacrifice. State senator Mike Green presented them with a certificate of appreciation during the welcome home ceremony.
"Sgt. Tim Larrison and Spc. Katelyn Larrison, for their outstanding service to our nation, may God keep them safe as they keep us safe," Sen. said as he read the certificate.
Katelyn, by the way, has a lot to celebrate. Because while she was at combat, "She bought her house on the Internet. She hasn't even seen her house," explained Tim Adams.
"I haven't seen it yet, obviously, but I'm excited to get in there and look around," Spec. Larrison said.
