NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
For over a century, the Boy Scouts have had a policy in place that bans gays. The national headquarters for the Boy Scouts is now considering lifting that ban for Scout leaders and youth membership.
Hugh Travis, Scout executive for the Middle Tennessee Council, told Channel 4 News he has received dozens of calls from Scout leaders in the Midstate.
"It's been mixed reaction. Opinions on both sides of the issue. We are not keeping a tally, but it's a hot-button issue, and time will tell how this will be resolved," said Travis.
If the ban is lifted, it would mean the Boy Scouts would not have a policy on sexual orientation. It would be up to local Boy Scout troops to decide the matter. Eighty percent of Boy Scout troops in Middle Tennessee are affiliated with churches.
"Charter partners will have the ability to determine its leadership standards for its youth members, and adults within the program," said Travis.
There are 37,000 Boy Scout members and leaders in the Midstate.
