New Britain officials discussing possible amusement complex

City officials in New Britain are considering expanding its offerings within the parks and recreation department by developing some land into a family friendly amusement complex.

The Action Zone amusement complex, which would include mini-kart, batting cages and go-karts, would be built in the location of the current maintenance shed for the Stanley Golf Course and near the site of the new Costco.

New Britain Mayor Tim O'Brien told Eyewitness News that they are studying the possibility of adding the amusement complex. And the city would use $1.5 million that it's getting from the retail giant to build the complex off Hartford Road.

"We want to make sure the city could actually make money on it," he said. "It's something that would be self-funding, something that could fund itself, and would add to the offerings of our park system and another venue for activities in this city."

However, city officials said they want to make sure there is enough traffic in the area to support the development.

"I think anything that's an addition to the community would be positive, something to keep the kids busy and out of trouble," said New Britain resident Debbie.

The proposed complex would he owned by the city and staffed by current parks and recreation employees along with seasonal workers.

O'Brien said they estimate concession sales at the park would cover the cost of the new hires.

Once the market analysis is complete, if city decides to go ahead with the plans for the Action Zone, it could have the amusement complex up and running by next spring.
