Cold medicines containing pseudoephedrine for sale at Pickwick Pharmacy. (Jan. 30, 2013/FOX Carolina)
GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Popular, over-the-counter cold medicines are often used by some to make meth instead of treating colds, but a new company said it has created a pill that will treat your cold and stay out of the hands of meth makers.
Pseudoephedrine is found in many cold medicines to treat colds, but because it is used by some people to manufacture methamphetamine, more restrictions are in place at pharmacies to try and prevent drug abuse.
Acura Pharmaceuticals' new drug Nexafed claims it will treat a cold but with its unique blending of ingredients, it will stop a meth maker in his or her tracks.
"We call it the next-generation pseudoephedrine product that has what we call impede technology applied to it; and that is a proprietary, very unique combination of safe, inactive ingredients that when put with our pseudoephedrine products block the extraction of pseudoephedrine," said Brad Rivet with Acura Pharmaceuticals.
Rivet said the drug is a win-win for cold medicine customers and for pharmacists.
"We give them a product that helps keep their community safer by removing that meth element," said Rivet.
Pharmacist Keith Ray agrees. Ray works at Pickwick Pharmacy on Augusta Road in Greenville.
"As long as it works great for our customers, we are looking forward to selling it and see if it helps us out in the pharmacy," said Ray.
Pickwick has already placed an order for Nexafed and plans to stock it soon.
Ray said selling products with pseudoephedrine is time-consuming and can be a hassle because of the restrictions in place.
"It can be a hassle," Ray said. "We have to get the customer's identification, we have to log on their information and we have to check to see if they've gotten Sudafed or a certain amount of Sudafed in the past month."
With Nexafed, Acura said its ability to block meth making will help ease that hassle for pharmacists and customers. The company said in-depth testing has shown the drug works just as well as other products currently on the market.
Several Upstate pharmacies told FOX Carolina they would be much more in favor of selling the new drug than others.
