Residents in Old Lyme are preparing for some major improvements to Soundview Beach.
For many residents like Butch Kohl, the hardest part about coming here is simply finding a parking spot. And recently, he says, it seems like Old Lyme has been trying to keep people away.
"The Old Lyme Chamber of Commerce is just trying to think of things to do to drive business out, like the bars and restaurants," he said. "They complain about the noise every year for two months."
East Lyme has unveiled its plan to spend $660,000 of state and federal funding that the town recently received. The plan includes permanent restrooms and a bikeway.
"We'd like to make it look better instead of so rundown," said Jane Gnazzo.
However, the plan cuts parking in half to less than 50 spaces.
"The people of Old Lyme have fouled up this area around here," Kohl said.
Gnazzo said she wants the beach area to get a facelift.
"I think it's going to be good for the kids to come down and it'll just make things a lot better," she said.
But opponents such as Kohl are convinced it's a creative way to edge people out.
"If you look at the parking on the street, one motorcycle per spot, two hour limit on parking, they've been trying to drive people out for years. And they're getting closer," he said.
