A film director is set to come to the state to look for locations for his upcoming movie about mental health in the wake of the Newtown school shooting.
Jonathan Bucari told WFSB that filming isn't scheduled for another month, but officials scouting for locations may be in Ridgefield, which is about 30 minutes or 20 miles from Newtown, sometime next week.
Bucari told WFSB that he thinks Ridgefield and Newtown have similar looks to them but some people who live here aren't happy about the idea.
"I think it was a tragedy," said Harry Daton of Ridgefield. "It happened and we are trying to fix it and you can keep talking about it forever I suppose."
Bucari said the movie Illness is about a 13-year-old boy named Benjamin with a mental illness and the growing fear of his parents after learning about the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in December.
The film has quickly become the talk of the town and before Bucari can film in Ridgefield, he needs a permit from the first selectman.
"If Mr. Bucari were to come to Ridgefield and attempt to secure a permit to do this film, he would be told no," said First Selectman Rudy Marconi. "We are not going to give a permit, issue a permit."
On average, Ridgefield issues only three filming permits a year.
Marconi told Eyewitness News that Monday morning was the first time that she learned about the film and has received lots of calls from residents about it.
"I haven't even heard of his name until this morning so it's all pretty fresh," Marconi said.
Burcai said he is planning to visit Ridgefield next week to look at locations.
"I feel for those families and bringing it up all the time, I don't know how it will affect them," said Kim Cunningham, who works in Ridgefield.
