ST. CHARLES PARISH, LA (WAFB) -
Authorities said impairment and speed were factors in an early morning fiery crash the day after the Super Bowl that left two people dead on I-10. Yahoo Sports is reporting that the two killed in the crash were the aunt and uncle of 49ers tight end Delanie Walker.
According to Yahoo, Alice and Bryan Young of Pomona, California were stopped on the shoulder of I-10 in St. Charles Parish. The accused drunk driver hit the couple as she veered off the highway.
Nechole Thomas, 26, of Houston was arrested following the crash. She is charged with two counts of vehicular homicide, DWI and reckless operation. She was booked into the St. Charles Parish Correctional Center.
The crash happened on I-10 West on the Bonnet Carre Spillway near mile marker 214 a little after 5:30 a.m. The interstate was closed for a few hours Monday morning.
Troopers said the 2002 Mercedes C230 Thomas was driving slammed into the back of a 2012 Nissan Altima stopped on the shoulder and both cars burst into flames. They said Thomas got out of the car with only minor injuries, but the two people inside the Altima were found dead once the fire was put out.
Investigators said they believe Thomas was impaired at the time of the wreck. A sample of her blood was sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
49ers Walker Tweeted about his aunt and uncle saying "Alice and bryan young my aunt and uncle was killed on Monday at 5 am after the super bowl by a drunk." "Im going to miss y'all but i know they are in a better place." He tweeted a picture of him with his aunt and uncle at the game.
The investigation into the deadly crash is ongoing.
