The first major snowfall has ended in Mid-Michigan. The Winter Storm Warning and Winter Weather Advisory that were in effect for the region have been allowed to expire.
Now it's time to dig out. Area road crews are working through the day and night to clear both primary and secondary roads. Local drivers were prepared for the snow -- Saginaw County 911 says only 21 accidents were reported between midnight and noon Friday. No injuries were reported.
Now that the snow has moved out it's time to brace for a brutally cold overnight. Temperatures will top out on Friday afternoon in the middle and upper 20s, then fall like a rock. Cold air will settle a top the region into the early A.M. hours of Saturday. Mid-Michigan will wake up to morning lows between -3 and -5 degrees below zero.
There were more than 250 closures across the region today due to the snow -- those include schools, senior centers, child care facilities and public agencies.
As far as snow totals go, unofficially, some people are reporting up to a foot of snow in Isabella, Gladwin and Midland counties. TV5 also has reports of drifts of over 14 inches. Other totals include 9 inches in Freeland, 4.7 inches in Flint, 6 inches in Saginaw and 7 inches in Bad Axe.
Besides snow-covered roads, winds out of the North will be fairly strong, with gusts over 20 mph. Those strong winds will create blowing and drifting snow. Visibility will be down to less than a mile in some areas. Winds will gradually decrease on Friday night.
Skies will continue to clear on Friday evening which will give Mid-Michigan a partly sunny start to the weekend. Meteorologist Lauren Fahrenkrug says the conditions will be perfect for outdoor snow activities.
