NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
The opposition mounts against a proposed development plan for downtown Brentwood.
The development would include retail, condos and restaurants in one of the busiest of town.
But an opposition group it will have a negative impact on the city
On Sunday at the Preserve Brentwood community action meeting some know each other, others were total strangers. But they were all concerned about the future of 17 acres, near the corner of Franklin Road and Maryland Farms.
"This is a monstrosity," Brentwood resident Elizabeth Knizley said. "This is not what Brentwood is, and not what Brentwood needs.
The roughly 900,000 square-foot project is expected to include retail, residential, restaurants, a hotel and movie theater.
Krystal Roark is one of many who attended the informational meeting about slated growth Sunday. She says it will have an effect on the entire community.
"This kind of new rezoning and commercial scale will have even more of an impact with our traffic," Roark said. "So that's why it affects me as well as the people that live in Brentwood south."
But project architect Michael Hindman disagrees.
"After the improvement of the intersections, some of the intersections would perform better after the development then they do right now," Hindman said.
Hindman adds under the city's zoning code condominiums must be part of the deal. He says the development will actually bring about $1.8 million a year to the city of Brentwood.
"We'd have a very positive impact on the schools because we'd be pumping a lot more money into the schools than the few students in the development," Hindman said.
Still members of Preserve Brentwood don't believe the project would have a positive impact. Concerns they plan to share will city leaders at Monday's commission meeting.
"We're not a group that's against development we are just for wise development," Gerald Witcher with Preserve Brentwood said.
Brentwood city leaders are set to vote on the Streets of Brentwood project Feb. 25.
