Interstate 91 from Windsor to the Massachusetts line has reopened after being closed in both directions because of icy conditions, according to the Connecticut Department of Transportation.
Connecticut State Police shut the interstate down around 10 a.m. because of slippery conditions and numerous spinouts and crashes.
DOT crews have been working to treat the roadways after snow, sleet and freezing rain fell during the Monday morning commute. By noon, the slick spots were gone.
Huge ponds of water also caused state police to shut down several lanes of traffic on I-91 southbound near the Colt Building Monday afternoon.
"The sewers are plugged," said Bill Trotta of Bonn Construction. "So people got to slow down when they go through the water, too, because it's going to definitely be bad."
According to the Associated Press, Massachusetts State Police said they closed I-91 southbound in Longmeadow at the request of Connecticut State Police.
If all primary state roads are cleared by Tuesday, state police told residents to budget extra time for their commute because it will likely be slow, whether it's more ice or ponding water.
Numerous roads remain closed due to the icy conditions, and DOT crews have been out treating them to get traffic moving as soon as possible.
One trucker told Eyewitness News that Monday's commute was nothing that he had not seen before.
"I'm originally from Alaska, this doesn't bother me," said George Campbell of Rome, NY.
AAA responded to more than 3,800 emergency road service calls from midnight Friday and Monday afternoon. The calls were "high volume of vehicle extrications, tows, jump starts and battery service calls."
Police are advising residents to avoid walking in the streets because of the weather conditions and large snow piles.
Pedestrians should walk against the direction of traffic because that way walkers can see oncoming traffic. When walking, people should stay close to the edge of the roadway, police said.
