Heavy equipment needed to clear Middletown streets

Posted: Updated:

Middletown Mayor Daniel Drew said every one of the city's 200 miles of road now has at least one lane of traffic getting by, but there's still plenty of work to complete to fully recover after Blizzard Charlotte dumped 3 feet of snow in several Connecticut cities and towns.

Many Middletown residents were snowed-in and cut-off from the rest of society after the storm on Friday and Saturday, and for Chris Colavito the sight of a pay loader was a welcome sight.

"They did come up the first night and they got stuck," Colavito said. "They said the amount of snow, they needed a pay loader first. We put in a lot of calls and they finally responded."

After being stranded for days, an army of trucks made their way up the hill, also getting to Knoll Ridge Court.

"I can't believe we were forgotten," said Stella Morda.

Morda said it's been a nightmare.

Her husband is in the hospital and with no easy way to get out, she said that's where her family has been spending their nights.

Finally, on Tuesday morning, some progress.

It was all-hands-on-deck as plow trucks, along with an industrial snow blower carved a path through the snow packed road.

It wasn't easy though. Even the plow got stuck for a few minutes.

"We're glad they're here," Morda said. "I'm appalled it took so long."

Drew said crews from Public Works, the Water Department and Parks & Recreation have been clearing out roads nonstop since the storm struck.

He said the first priorities were clearing the main roads along with Middlesex Hospital, the fire department and police stations.

While the roads in Middletown are open, Drew said the city should be getting four additional pay loaders and two excavators from the state to help with the cleanup process.

He said he's meeting with the superintendent, but it's likely there won't be school Wednesday.
