The Bridgeport Fire Department is trying to determine what caused a blaze at a home Wednesday morning after neighbors told police that they heard shots being fired before the fire started.
Firefighters were called to a fire at a home on Robert Street just after 9:30 a.m. after the initial call reported shots coming from the residence.
"My grandson says there's fire and when I look up I saw smoke coming out through the window," said neighbor Yvonne Nelson.
Upon arrival, firefighters observed a woman dangling out of a third-story window. That unidentified woman was rescued by firefighters.
"She was getting ready to jump," said Bridgeport Fire Asst. Chief William Hathaway.
Worried about shots being fired, firefighters did not enter the building until police entered the search. After a police search of the home, firefighters entered the residence and found a man with serious burns on the floor of a second-floor room.
"Because of the initial report, the department had to treat it as an active shooter situation," said Police Chief Joseph L. Gaudett Jr. "And because of the working fire in the house, the officers didn't have the luxury of time."
Both the man and woman were taken to an area hospital. The woman, who is believed to be the man's mother, did not suffer life-threatening injuries.
Fire officials said when firefighters entered the home, it was still unclear if there was a gunman in the residence.
"They didn't hesitate," said Bridgeport Fire Chief Brian Rooney.
The man believed to have opened fire was found in the home, but no weapon was discovered. Police said there was no evidence of gunfire.
Neighbors told Eyewitness News they have seen police at this man's home before.
Two dogs were also rescued from the home.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but the fire started in the room where the man was found.
"This was a fluid, fast-moving situation, and our police officers and firefighters did an outstanding job," said Mayor Bill Finch.
