NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Volunteers and area businesses came together Wednesday to offer Nashville's homeless community a place to turn for help.

About 160 volunteers and 85 businesses were at the state fairgrounds to give more than 300 homeless people in Nashville much needed assistance.

"This is about self-sufficiency and helping someone get stable and find a place of their own," said Project Homeless Connect director Will Connelly.

The organization offers a number of services to put an end to homelessness.

Volunteers were a shoulder to lean on for the attendees, helping them gather information as they look for a home and job.

At the event, various services offered included medical screenings and legal counseling for those overcoming a rough past.

Even foot care specialists and new shoes were available for those who spend hours on their feet.

"I am still on the verge of losing my things if I do not pay my rent, if I do not get a certain amount of money somewhere," said Maggie, who is homeless.

Volunteers typed resumes, barbers gave haircuts and people had a chance to make a phone call home.
