CLAYPOOL, AZ (CBS5) -

A field of dreams is more of a nightmare after a place where little leaguers play ball burned down Friday.

The Pinal Mountain Little League is in Claypool, AZ, in the Globe-Miami area and is a ballpark that has been in families' lives for generations.

"This is a ball park that I played in the '70s," said Wes Sukosky. "This is probably the only thing that happens in the Globe-Miami area in the summertime, so it's very important."

Sukosky told CBS 5 News an early morning fire on Friday ripped through one of the storage buildings where they kept gear and supplies.

"We lost tees and we lost, and as you can see, balls that are lying all around that have melted and helmets," Sukosky said.

More than 400 kids ages 5 to 12 play in the league, including Sukosky's son, Jacob.

"I'm mostly an outfielder," Jacob said. "Usually I get my own stuff but sometimes I have to use the stuff from the league."

The season starts in about six weeks, and Sukosky said they want to get the ballpark back to the way it used to be.

"It would mean a lot to these kids right here if we can get this going, quick," said Sukosky.

Some of the items the league lost also include:

  • pitching machine
  • cash register
  • forty bats
  • two sets of catcher's gear gloves
  • sprinkler heads and PVC pipes
  • eight batting tees
  • portable pitcher's mound
  • refrigerator and freezer
  • twenty duffle bags
  • three cases of baseballs
  • four cases of softballs
  • machine to line the filed
  • lawnmower

If you would like to help the league, call Sukosky at 928-812-0957.
