SOUTHINGTON, CT (WFSB) -

Southington police have arrested a mother who they said was stealing from her disabled daughter's "special needs trust."

According to police, 59-year-old Joan Wilkinson took more than $200,000 of money that was intended for her daughter.

Police said they were alerted by the Department of Social Services after an investigator discovered that Wilkinson had been misappropriating funds from the account since 2005.

Investigators said Wilkinson named herself as a trustee on the account and withdrew the funds to then deposit into her own account for personal use.

Wilkinson was arrested on Feb. 22. She is charged with first-degree larceny and money laundering. She is due in Bristol Superior Court on March 8.
